Roberto’s achievements on the field, his
pride in Puerto Rico, his concern for children, his empathy with
the struggles of others, and his premature death have made him
one of those individuals so beloved and admired that people want
to keep him alive in their memory.
Dozens
of books in Spanish, English, and Japanese have recorded his story.
His image has inspired illustrators, painters, and sculptors.
After his death, broad sectors of the population spontaneously
paid him tribute through creations of popular art such as crafts,
poems, paintings, ceramics, and drawings. Countless
commemorative articles have been created around his image, even
a coin in circulation in the African nation of Liberia.
Clemente’s
likeness has been used commercially for products
ranging from breakfast cereal to baseball cards to bobble-head
dolls to beanie babies.
